TURTLE REFERENCE
All ROS distributions have a Turtle reference. Box Turtle, C Turtle, Diamondback .....
All ROS distributions have a Turtle reference. Box Turtle, C Turtle, Diamondback .....
The reasons cited for such are;
- Reference to one of the first mobile robots made; William Grey Walter's Elmer and Elsie - they looked like turtles.
- LOGO Turtle, probably the simplest GUI based simulations for navigation. ROS also has a package very similar to the LOGO Turtle and it is often recommended as a tutorial for newbies.
- Other interesting reasons are, Turtle World and "It's turtles all the way down"

Hi Arkapravo!!
u might remember i once contact u for the problem regarding installation of player/ stage.. now i m contacting u fr a different purpose, suggestions regarding final year robotics project..
we r planning to build a simple autonomous robot which will be using Microsoft Kinect for
SLAM (Basically project is on SLAM), now the issue is of software platform which we have
to use,we have 2 options either ROS or player/stage. currently we don't knw either player/stage nor ROS, so we hve to learn any of it from the start, (we want to use ROS actually) i want to ask few things
1. will learning player first will help in learning ROS ? or we can start from ROS directly
2. which is more complex (ROS or player/stage, i m doing soft. engg, my knwoledge of software i hope will be enough to learn any)
3. since we have to implement in real robot (only simulation is not enough), writing
drivers for which platform will be easier..
4. if we fully concentrate on ROS, how long will it take to learn ROS enough for our project
5. for ROS which version of ubuntu will be the better, (which version r u using), since (i hve not tried installing ROS, does the instruction regarding installation of ROS on the ROS website will be enough? , i mean is ROS installation simple?)
I m really sorry for disturbing u ........
Thanks for taking ur time
Good luck fr ur robotics carrier.........
waiting for ur reply
regards
usama
Hi usama
ROS is pretty easy to learn. For further discussions I suggest that we communicate over email.
